Nnamdi Max, Makurdi

The Police in Benue State on Wednesday confirmed the setting ablaze of a suspected leader of a robbery gang, Nator Ioryue, popularly known as Natiooo, in Korinya, the Konsisha Local Government Area of the state, by an angry mob.

Natiooo’s gang is said to have terrorised the area for some years.

It was learnt that the police arrested the hoodlums after they had attacked a businessman, identified as Terna Orakaa, while returning home with his daughter on Tuesday.

A resident, Peters Doki, said, “Natiooo and his gang set up two roadblocks.

“The businessman and his daughter managed to escape from the first one, but were unlucky as the robbers caught up with them in the second one.

“But police came and arrested the robbers and took them to the police station.”

It was learnt that some angry youths later stormed the police station and allegedly forcefully brought out the gang leader, beat him into a coma and later set him ablaze.

Spokeswoman for the police in the state, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Catherine Anene, who confirmed the suspect’s killing, said they had launched a manhunt for his killers.

Anene said, “The incident occurred at our police post in the area. The policemen there were trying to transfer the suspect to the command headquarters when some youths forcefully brought him out.

“They (mob) said even if the suspect was taken to court, he would find his way back and continue to terrorise the community.

“The command has deployed more men in the area to fish out those behind the action and we will make sure that the people face the wrath of law.”
