Arguably Nigeria’s most popular (in terms of followership) at the moment, Naira Marley was born 9th May 1994 in Agege area of Lagos State, Nigeria. Azeez Fashola (real name) later moved to Peckham, South London, England at age 11. He obtained his General Certificate of Secondary Education Walworth School before graduating with a distinction in business from Peckham Academy. He also enrolled for business law at Crossways College (now Christ the King Sixth Form College).
Naira Marley had always wanted to become an MC and voice-over artist while growing up as a little boy. He staretd his musice career in 2014 after discovering his love for music and was motivated by friends to pursue music as a career. In 2015, Naira Marley released his first studio work, Max Twigz-assisted track “Marry Juana” before dropping his debut EP Gotta Dance.
He featured Olamide and Lil Kesh to release the single that brought him to prominence in 2015, “Issa Goal”, which was later adopted as the Super Eagles’ theme song at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On 16th June 2018, the official remix of “Issa Goal” was released with feature vocals from Olamide, Lil Kesh, Falz, Simi and Slimcase.
Naira Marley was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 10 May 2019, alongside his friends Zlatan, Tiamiu Abdulrahman Kayode, Adewunmi Adeyanju Moses and Abubakar Musa. This came days after releasing the video for the controversial single “Am I A Yahoo Boy”. The EFCC later released Zlatan and three others five days later but kept Naira Marley in custody. They claimed to have “overwelming” evidence against Naira Marley, hence he was charged to court on 16th May 2019 on 11 count charges at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, bordering on internet fraud and cyber crime; if found guilty, the 11 counts carry a potential sentence of seven years in jail.
While still in the EFCC custody, he released On 19 May 2019, he released the single “4 Nights In Ekohtiebo” where he spoke about his industry friends, foes and other people who have admired him. He was arraigned in May 2019 before the Lagos court and he pleaded “not guilty”. He was later granted bail in the sum of ₦2m and the case was adjourned till 22 October 2019 for commencement of trial.
After fulfilling the bail condition, Naira Marley was released from EFCC custody on 14 June 2019.
The “Soapy” crooner is married to two women and blessed with four children.
Naira Marley announced the launch of his Record Label during the “Marlian Fest”, which was held at the Eko Hotels and Suites on 30 December 2019. Marlian Records was unveiled with te signing of Cblvck, Zinoleesky, MohBad and Fabian Blu ..
