Polygamy is currently a hot topic of debate. Yul Edochie, a Nollywood actor, surprised the world when he announced the birth of his baby from another lady, whom he has now declared as his second wife (more on that later). His statement has sparked several discussions and debates concerning polygamy — is it legal? Wrong?
Today, we’ll look at 5 Nollywood actors who are married to more than one wife, as well as some of the reasons why they do so.
Are you ready to take the plunge? Then let’s get started!
Yul Edochie
Yul Edochie is, of course, at the top of our list. On April 27, 2022, the actor, who has been married to his wife May for seventeen years, appeared on social media to declare that he had a son outside of his marriage with May, with another lady with whom he had sex during their marriage. In his Instagram announcement, he also referred to the son’s mother as his second wife. His announcement read as follows:
It’s time for the rest of the world to meet my son. STAR DIKE MUNACHIMSO YUL-EDOCHIE.@stardikeyuledochie is his name. My second wife, @judyaustin1, gave birth to me. And I adore him just as much as I adore my other children.
Yul is the first celebrity on our list to be married to more than one woman, and this is due to a child he had with the woman.
2. Oga Bello
Salami Adebayo, sometimes known as Oga Bello, is a well–known Nollywood actor and the father of another well-known actor, Femi Adebayo. Oga Bello is married to two different women. His first wife, Alhaja Ejide, whom he met in primary school, is his first wife. They became acquaintances before embarking on a love engagement. They’ve been married for more than four decades.
Iya Lai, Oga Bello’s second wife, was introduced to him by his younger sister. During an interview about running a polygamous household, he stated:
It is not simple to govern a polygamous household, and it is only by God’s grace that it is possible. It cannot be applied to everyone. The best marriage is one of one man and one wife, but if any of my offspring are fated to have more than one wife, there is nothing I can do about it. I believe I am predestined to be a polygamist.
3. Segun Ogungbe
Actor Segun Ogungbe is another Nollywood actor who has married more than one wife. Segun’s late uncle, Akin Ogungbe, married 20 wives and had 50 children, thus two is nothing in comparison for Segun. Segun and his wives, Atinuke and Omowunmi, he claims, live in perfect harmony. During an interview, he stated:
My family and I live in a pleasant environment. God has blessed me with wives that communicate well with one another. Only God can provide a guy with a tranquil house. To those who believe that I will have 20 wives like my uncle, all I can say is that they should mind their own business.
4. Ogogo
Taiwo Hassan, often known as Ogogo, is a well-known Yoruba actor who is married to more than one woman. He has two wives, Ajoke Taiwo and Taibat Taiwo. Ogogo claims that:
Everything in life, in my opinion, has to do with fate. I promised I’d never have a second wife since I was never a fan of polygamy, but it happened for a reason, and I feel it was a good purpose.
5. Jide Kosoko
Jide Kosoko, a well-known Nollywood actor, is the final man on today’s list. Earlier in her life, the outstanding actor was married to two ladies, but she tragically lost both of them eleven months apart during kid month. Following that, he married two more women, increasing his total number of wives to four. Jide had this to say about it:
I never imagined myself as a polygamist, despite the fact that I am a product of one. My parents were also opposed. My first wife was a successful businesswoman. I yearned for someone who worked in the same field as myself. Back then, the best advise you could get was from your better half, which is how the second woman came to be. Along the way, I lost both to delivery within an 11-month period. I had seven children at the time, so I had no intention of remarrying or having additional children.
But, after much coaxing from my doctor and relatives, I chose to have a woman with the understanding that I would not have any more children, but a true African woman would not agree to that. One thing led to another, and I found myself with two women once more. So being a polygamist is not my choice, but rather God’s design, over which I have no control.
